Scaleless Palmetto Corn Snake For Sale

A Scaleless palmetto corn snake is a high-end designer morph that combines the recessive Scaleless gene with the Palmetto mutation. This results in a snake that is virtually white with random colorful “pixel” flecks and a smooth, velvet-like skin texture due to the complete or near-complete absence of dorsal scales.

Key Characteristics Of The Palmetto corn snake

  • Appearance: They typically possess a clean white base color with random dark or bright speckling. Because they lack scales, their underlying colors often appear more saturated and “high definition” compared to scaled versions.
  • Texture: Their skin is described as feeling like soft silk, human skin, or a marshmallow.
  • Remaining Scales: While the top of the body is scaleless, they almost always retain ventral (belly) scales, which are necessary for normal movement and climbing. Some may also have small clusters of scales around the eyes, nose, or tail.
  • Health: The mutation does not impair their senses or general health, and they hatch and shed normally, though their eyes may appear slightly larger without surrounding scales.

Market Value

  • Price: Scaleless palmetto corn snake are among the more expensive corn snake morphs. High-quality specimens are often priced between $2,000 and $4,000.

Specialized Care Considerations

While general corn snake care applies, scaleless varieties have specific needs:
  • Strict Frozen-Thawed Diet: Never feed live prey. Without the protective barrier of scales, these snakes are much more vulnerable to bites or scratches from live rodents.
  • Enclosure Safety: Avoid using sharp or abrasive decor (like certain rough rocks or splintery wood) that could snag or tear their exposed skin.
  • Humidity: Maintain humidity between 40-60%, increasing to 70% during a shed to ensure they don’t experience “stuck shed” on their skin.
  • Hydration: Providing a shallow water bowl for soaking is crucial for skin health.
The Scaleless gene is a recessive mutation that results in the complete or partial absence of dorsal (top and side) scales. While often surrounded by controversy, it is a well-established gene in the hobby with specific biological and historical details:

Scaleless Palmetto Corn Snake Baby

1. Genetic Origin & History

  • Discovery: The mutation was first produced in 2002 by breeder Richard Dijoux in France.
  • Hybrid Ancestry: The first scaleless babies were born from a cross between a Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) and a Great Plains Rat Snake (Pantherophis emoryi). Because of this, all “scaleless” corn snakes in the hobby today are technically inter-species hybrids.
  • Inheritance: It is a simple recessive trait, meaning a snake must inherit one copy of the gene from each parent to be visually scaleless.
  • Relationship to Microscale: In 2021, it was proven that Scaleless and Microscale are allelic, meaning they occur at the same location on a chromosome.

2. Physical Characteristics

  • Partial Scaling: Despite the name, these snakes are not 100% scaleless. They almost always retain ventral (belly) scales, which are essential for movement and protection. They also usually have “ocular scales” (spectacles) over their eyes.
  • Vibrant Coloration: Without the semi-transparent layer of scales, the pigments in the skin appear much more saturated and vivid than in scaled snakes.
  • Skin Texture: Their skin is described as feeling like soft silk, a marshmallow, or a latex balloon.

3. Health & Biological Misconceptions

  • Hydration: Scientific studies have shown that scaleless palmetto corn snake do not lose moisture faster than scaled ones.
  • Shedding: They shed their skin, not their scales. A healthy scaleless snake should shed in a single piece, though the shed will look like a smooth, transparent tube rather than a textured one.
  • Egg Tooth: Unlike some other scaleless species (like ball pythons), scaleless corn snakes typically hatch with an egg tooth and can pierce their own shells without assistance.

4. Comparison to Other Species

Feature Corn/Rat Snake (Scaleless)Ball Python (Scaleless)
Belly ScalesPresentAbsent
Heat PitsN/A (Species doesn’t have them)Absent (Often lost with gene)
ViabilityHigh; live full, normal livesHigh controversy; often frail
Because the palmetto corn snake lack the “armor” of scales, it is critical to use soft substrates and avoid live prey, as a single bite or scratch from a rodent can cause severe damage to their exposed skin.
